Outubro - October

My last visit to Montijo had been quick in June, for my birthday. For four months I had maintained my daily commitment to water the young trees I had planted in the spring. The impatience was increasing as I carried the buckets of water and I couldn't have the end of the dry season in sight.
Finally the wet weather came. At the perfect time to be present on my mother's birthday. At the same time, there was an anomaly in the solar system that made electricity management even more difficult.
Already in Montijo, I recharged my batteries with family and friends. I hanged out as I didn't for a long time. Montijo's was especially comforting, reminding me of my origins.
I also warmed my heart with past illusions, which encouraged me to keep the project in the Blue House.
This was also the month in which I made wine for the first time. Vines that climb the willows by the stream gave me more than 100 kilos of grapes. With the help of my neighbor Joaquim's ladder and the teachings of my mentor Mr. Zé, I made the easy amount of 80 liters.

Reflexão das Entradas - New Year's Reflection

As pessoas perguntam-me porquê.

As it had happened in Thailand, after about six months, I stopped writing. People ask me why. I answer that I get tired of writing every step I take. I don't want to waste time reporting but doing something.
The enthusiasm has settled. Maybe I'm not so proud of what I'm doing, especially what I'm doing to myself. I love working the land and I really want to continue the project but the isolation and the lack of conditions to live in Casa Azul have to change.
After all, one of the reasons I gave up my job was not being able to apply my human qualities, which, when they have the opportunity to express themselves, make me rejoice inside.
I will try to describe every month in the project until today and then share what I think is relevant.
Without even knowing what awaits me in this new year, I wish you the best.

Bem, não me parece mal. E regressei à estrada ainda a respirar fundo.

A banca do Samuel - Samuel's stand

I was dreaming that I had found Zezinho. I woke up with, that I think to be, a rat playing on the outside of the tent next to my head. This guy doesn't give up! (It wasn't the first time). It was still six in the morning, but I was worried. The dog disappeared for a week, and after they had told me about ties (boar traps) by the stream, I was went there, still a little dizzy. I got into the middle of a very diverse forest, but nothing. I went back feeling down. It was time to go to the fair in Alpedrinha where I would find friends in the organic market.
On the way I stopped to drink coffee and shortly after returning to the road, a dog appeared like an arrow in the middle of the road. I braked strongly but the clash was inevitable. The dog rolled, whined, and limped to safety. I stopped the car, put my hands on my head, and asked, "What the fuck! I'm thinking of one who disappeared and now I almost killed another! What the hell does this mean?" I didn't find the owner, and the dog, no longer whining, went further into a property. Well, he seems ok. And I returned to the road still breathing deeply.
Alpedrinha was really busy and it wasn't easy to find a parking spot. In the market, I met my friend Samuel of Covilhã, who was with his son behind his stand, with Eric of Mount of Oaks with whom I shared the experience of tree irrigation, with Cristi who was representing Ananda Marga and asked by Zezinho, with a gentleman whom I bought fresh goji berries (did you already eat it?) and told me that few people can get the fruits, and with Vasco with whom I shared cultivation techniques and antisocial habits.
In the fair, where I was looking for something to eat, Emma, also from Mount of Oaks, called me to sit with them, keep the conversation up to date and eat a shepherd's sandwich.
When I arrived, Spanish Luis was waiting for me to see how we can repair the mine, after giving up the help of Dirty Joaquim.
As he was walking, I took him to the association where he paid me a drink. Outside, having a talk with Mr. Orlindo and an Americo (emigrant), I got more olive trees to take care of, so that I could make olive oil. The last one went to show me the land and besides the olive trees there are also chestnuts rees, apple trees, pear trees, fig trees, nectarines, kiwifers and vines that send the fruit to the ground every year.
To break my solitary routine of tasks on the land, it was a full day.

A Árvore Que Vai Salvar o (Meu) Mundo - The Tree That Will Save (My) World

A Albizia da padaria - The Silktree in the bakery

A Falsa Acácia à beira da estrada - The Black Locust next to the road

Black Locust, scientific name: Robinia Pseudoacacia. It's from the family of legumes and almost like all the members, absorbs nitrogen from the air and incorporates it into the soil, improving it. These plants are even called enhancers or support ones and the fruits are shaped like pods such as peas and beans (also from this family).
In the planning of an agroforestry they're of extreme importance and initially they should constitute 80 to 90% of the species planted. In tropical climates there are several species but in Portugal, tree-shaped, I only remember Carob that I have serious doubts that it establishes here. (Must try). Instead they use very fast growing species for biomass that are then cut and placed in the soil but don't have the capacity to fix nitrogen: poplars, eucalyptus and even banana trees.
I include this species in the list of my agroforest and other relatives such as Honey Locust or Silktree. These species are hard to find. There aren't in nurseries and on internet they are expensive.
Not long ago I realized that the tree they have in the courtyard of the bakery (where I go to get my mail) is a Silktree. Who would say. With the attempt of cuttings failed, I'm now waiting for the pods to dry. And some days ago, while I was searching for Zezinho, I found a Black Locust, also in the little Terreiro das Bruxas (this settelment). Already with the dried pods, I brought some and according to my bible of plants (pfaf) I put the seeds in water 48h before sowing them. Isn't that just past 8 hours, the seeds have already germinated in the water?! This tree is deserted to save the world and I will only be the way to.
That statment: "When we look around we find everything we need," couldn't be so true.

After all the seeds weren't germinating. The umbilical cords that attach the seeds to the pods are what swelled in the water and gave me that feeling. But I like the text anyway :)

O meu pai diz-me que me estou a tornar um bicho.

The month of August is coming to an end. Migrants are beginning to return to France, days are getting smaller and temperatures don't seem to rise any higher. It was a month of receiving visitors. With my cousin also came some very pleasant recent friends and last week I had my parents and the first visit of my sister.
Blackberries grow everywhere and I no longer know what to do with it. I've made jam, liqueur, syrup, and I eat them regularly in many ways. The same for the apples of just two apple trees. Cider and dehydration are my bets to keep them.
Having help here in the farm was really good, not only for seeing the tasks being done faster but especially for sharing actions that I believe are beneficial to a sustainable way of living and, consequently, for all. My cousin, friends and my sister (who enjoyed being here more than expected) motivated me to receive volunteers.
My cousin told me something that left me thinking: "Sometimes we have a romantic idea of living this way but I couldn't." This applies very well to my mother of whom I have listened all my life claiming to be a lover of the country side and doesn't tolerate a little dust or a bug. For my cousin and others who feel the same way I have something to say: This doesn't happen in two days. It's a gradual process that takes time and this adaptation will happen if we continue without inner peace in the current society and keep inside the intention to live with more meaning and in harmony with what we believe to be right. Six years ago I was a city boy who'd panic with spiders and just walked barefoot on the beach.
With my parents also came the consumption habits. They brought me many things among them a small refrigerator that I admit will be useful but that I wasn't used to it anymore. I was able to ask myself: If it's healthier to eat the products of the season, keeping food in an artificial environment so it can be eaten at other times is positive?
They also brought me a closet for the clothes that are assembled with a thousand pieces of plastic that come bagged in plastic in a box all glued with more plastic. What about the smell of the cover? Toxic.
While they were here, they bought more things, which I already had or didn't need. I found in the garbage bread that had been left over from the several days they were here. I know it's the habit but IN A FARM THERE'S NO ORGANIC WASTE. I spread the bread for the neighbor's skinny dogs as Karoline had done before.
I also don't feel good about the times we went out to eat while they were here. My own body is no longer used to to such heavy food and is financially unsustainable. There are still too many people to think that men measure themselves by the wallet but I believe they measure themselves by kindness.
My dad tells me that I'm becoming an animal. Even at 40 it's hard to hear this because that's where we want to hear the best things. Fortunately there are those who consider me inspiring and who wish to return.
I don't give up on anyone but the selfish and irresponsible lifestyle of the so-called first world I've given up for a long time.

O Meu Primeiro Fogo - My First Fire

With the morning tasks done and lunch taken, it was time to find a cool place for me and Zezinho. At home the thermometer was already 34º and it was still only 2pm.
As soon as I reach the main road, I see a beginning of fire in the mountains of Meimão. Fuck! On the second day of the first infernal week of August there is already a fire. I stopped the car and called 112. How does a fire starts there in the middle of a pine forest?! At the same time I hear the sirens of a fire engine. The situation had already been reported. Can I help with anything? Fortunately, the weak wind was going that way. I can't go relaxed to have a swim anywhere. On the way to a cafe I passed a GNR car and another one of the forest saplers. Not bad. In the cafe, with a panoramic view of the mountains, I had some difficulties in quieting Zezinho. The owner was the one who had reported the fire, he says, when the height of the smoke was only 2 meters. The cars were coming. The calm of the people in the cafe tranquilezed me, and after drinking a coffee, two helicopters were already in action. The fire was very small but the answer was merciless. I know we have traumatizing memories from last year but I feel completely grateful.
Already in the lake with Zezinho, a car with the sappers and a private jeep with two soldiers who got water in the lake (to the annoyance of Zezinho) passed by. Everyone is alert but I am finally proud of the seriousness with which this problem is being taken. We must have the most experienced people dealing with fires. We are no longer children in this matter.

Apparently the cause of the fire was a damaged high voltage cable that began to discharge to the ground. Something as simple as this can be catastrophic. But of course, it isn't a natural cause.

Lago Que Agita Mas Não Seca - Pond That Stirs But Doesn't Dry

Fiquei eu, as minhas árvores e o Zezinho.

End of July. Six months will be completed in my rural adventure. The present tasks have been struggling with the heat (which has even been moderate). Provide water to what I planted and at the same time don't run out of it. My physical condition isn't bad but my back has been another challenge. To remind me that I'm not a kid anymore. After a short experience with pills, I found in yoga and regular swimming the improvements I was looking for.
Loneliness is also, always, a present challenge. Despite the bonds I have created, not too tight, on the rare occasions I have had visitors, I can see the enthusiasm of my heart. Zezinho, my friend that I haven't told you about yet, fills something up but also gives me a lot of headache. And it has made me see how easily I make the same education mistakes as I was victimized.
The last visit I had, of two traveled friends, stirred my lake in many ways. I realized the routine in which I live (maybe that's the only way to be here alone), they reminded me how creative we are when twe travel, giving me a lot of obvious ideas I wasn't able to see. And they warmed my heart by letting me share all I live here, usually alone. The simple conditions didn't bother them at all and sparked my wish to share this space/life with someone. "Turquoise birds have filled this space with light but they only have a way of keep doing it - flying"
Here I stayed, my trees and Zezinho.
This feeling is not new, but this time I'm in the right place and doing what I should.
