Simples!

The water was coming from the mine to the shower, but in the kitchen, the water came through buckets or bottles. About thirty meters from the shower. Previously the buckets came from the mine and it was a little more.
In the first farm where I did volunter work in Portugal (in the House of Friends) something that caught my attention was a very simple mechanism where a tap is fixed on a stick stuck in the ground.

Making
Of the 'T' that was not being used in the shower, I left a way out to the shower and the other I connected a hose with 25m which, either buried or covered with whatever was available, comes near the hovel. I drilled a hole in a stake with the help of a portable screwdriver that my father lent me and stick it in the ground. The hose enters on one side, the tap on the other and the cable ties complete the connection. Simple!

Use
I only realized the difference in comfort that this little project brought after its use. Not having to carry buckets of water is wonderful And something so simple. It's one of the projects that I'm most proud of. Something I don't like is that when it is hot, the water comes out with some foam and comes with a toxic smell. That's what you get for buying cheap hoses.

Improvements
A hose may not be best for taking water from one point to another for various uses such as bathing but this is the beginning of having piped water at home and probably in the gardens and watering places. I am currently making progress on this, but I will leave the details for later.

Actualmente o tubo já se encontra em utilização mas a parede continua a verter - Currently the pipe is already in use but the wall is still leaking

Without water neither there are cultures nor I can stay here. The mine doesn't dry in the summer but stays almost empty. Ensuring its availability is a key factor for the progress of the project.
The idea is to raise and reinforce the wall, and by the way, put a pipe where later the water can come out from. At the moment, a thinner tube passes over the same wall, being necessary, from the other end, to suck until this one is full. Without air, the weight of the water in the tube itself, by vacuum, draws water from a higher point (mine).

Making
I bought some bricks, cement and a white waterproofing powder. I emptied the water from the mine, I tried to seal the inner corners with the cement and made the hole for the pipe. I covered the irregularities of the hole and began to reinforce the wall outside. I had a lot of trouble putting the cement between to completely bond the bricks.

Result
A shit! Perhaps because of the cleaning I did at the beginning, I realized that the water runs through the sides and under the wall that was already there. The hole I made for the pipe was also pouring and between the bricks I also could not insulate well. This is the project that made the situation worse than what it was. I didn't finish the wall being too disapponited.

Improvements
A few days ago I took a mason to see my beautiful work and he pointed out two clear errors: The tube cannot be made out of plastic. It has to be rigid. And the bricks aren't used in this case, because they let the water pass. With two plates, the interior is filled with solid cement and an iron tube is used. He also advised me to make the wall a little further.

Covilhã, Cidade Que Me Encantou - Covilhã, City That Charmed Me

E deixem-me dizer-vos: Já não me lembrava o quanto mau é o Continente.

Today was the day to go out. I had been isolated for almost four days in the Witch's Land and had things to do in a city with a job center. Only yesterday I realized that Covilhã is 15 km closer than Guarda. The destination was traced and the missions were many, more accurately 12, knowing in advance that it would be difficult to carry them all out. I gave priority to the ones to do in Covilhã.
On arrival I was blown away by the density of trees and plants on every street. Houses with stone archways and even the mall seems to be buried in a jungle. The people here really worship the gardens and vegetation. Plenty of stores, streets going up and down and, here and there, a breathtaking view down there from the Sierra.
The first stop was at Lidl, where a very well-dressed gentleman, even trembling, made me a sketch with the way to the job center.
In the waiting room I couldn't resist to talk with the present people and it was pleasant to see how an environment of heavy silence became something more relaxed. And it's as easy as: "Where's the ...?"
I was attended by a lady from Montijo called Carla who was so touched to find a countryman that didn't even get surprised by the engineer who is looking for a part-time in education or as a gardening assistant.
Being a little late I changed my plans for lunch, and there in the center, I opted for a vegetarian with a cheap menu. I was so well received by a French guy and his Filipino mother who already speak Portuguese very well. They gave me numerous contacts of permaculture people, including the farm which they are associated to and also let me know of a gathering that will be in the university about alternative/local economies where the network they mentioned will be and I won't miss. They also give free meditation sessions on Wednesdays. I came out of the restaurant so ecstatic that it seems like I hadn't tasted the food, which was great. Wanting but not looking for we might stumble on what we need. I went to drink a coffee in the central square enjoying life (people) wandering the cobblestones.

Don't think I want to go back to the city. Cashiers who behave like robots, stoplights that can not be ignored, the smell of the burned gas or consumers with a sterile look continue to be hated at first impressions. But I like the effect that loneliness has on me by making me a more open person. And to be a city, so be it sprouting green everywhere.

Everything was great but there was more to do. Bricomarché, Maxmat, Worten and Continente. And let me tell you: I no longer remembered how bad Continent is. Everything bagged, everything Spanish, even the carts are hateful. With a super space design but always bumping on my heels. At one point, with only apples and kiwis in my bag, I thought about leaving the cart and go away, but I didn't have time to go anywhere else.
I also went to two shops of pipes and one of electricity. In this last one, I met a charismatic gentleman named Carlos, with whom I quickly created a funny chemistry. He told me I was doing everything wrong and gave me almost a course on how to set up a power grid at home. It was so intense that we had to take a break because there was already a queue of people to be attended. I brought a budget and I thanked Mr. Carlos much.
I returned already after 7 with the sun beating on the summit of the mountains. It's only 30 km, as from Montijo to Setúbal, but with dream landscapes andf no traffic. I came with the heart full, renewed mood and the certainty of a see you soon Covilhã.

Projecto VIII : Limpeza da Cave, Pintura e Porta - Basement Cleaning, Painting and Door

Melhorias

The basement began as a dark and damp place, full of junk and rotting stuff. It has no windows but thick walls and one side is a huge rock that holds the kitchen. One of the great advantages of the basement is that the temperature inside never changes much.

Process
I was on my own and with the spirit of reuse, I took things slowly, cleaned them, inspected them and separated them into groups outside. Somehow I got to see the movie of how they lived there in the past through the objects and especially when I looked at the old farmer's clothes (which I never saw) that appeared to be tall for the time. (I've already wondered how the doors of the hovel are not that short).
With the arrival of my parents came the questions: "But what do you want this for? Throw that away!" Recently I have thrown some bottles, glasses and cutlery out but certain things have been very useful in my projects.
I left the cleaning machines (my parents) on the loose and then shared a moment with my father of masons and painters. It was probably the first time I used cement (to plug holes in the wall) it seems he have been impressed. We painted the walls in white so the "hole" wouldn't get so dark.
The door, quite in pieces but still with the hinges buried in the stone, was repaired by me. By the will of my father it had been a new one. As the structure is of a good quality wood, I replaced the tops (I left a wicket) and put a lock. It's not that a kick doesn't open it but at least it's more beautiful.

Use
The basement has served exactly what it was intended for. It's where I keep the tools, the materials like wood, nets, tarps, tubes and wires, seeds, the core of the electrical system, some junk, and mice and rats that find the place cozy.

Improvements
The water intakes have been gradually fixed. It's difficult to say that it will be perfect when a wall is made of rock. The door will eventually be replaced, but security (fear) is not my priority. Recently it took a lamp in the ceiling that makes it look much better.

Cost
Paint, cement, lock and little else (I have no idea)

Na Cave - In the Basement

Yesterday in the basement, by moviming some things, I knocked down a pile that I have with sponges, tarps and other materials that I know are useful, I just don't know when. A place where I had already found a mouse nest. I thought to myself, but not believing, there went the mice to hell. When I put everything back in place, I see on the floor 4 babies that had fallen from the pile. Wow! It's always a stunning image, not only because they're mice, but because I've just rammed a nest with newborns. What am I going to do?
Some (many) people I know would have killed them. Others, with uncontrolled compassion, would have tried to put them back in the nest (which I still had to go look for). I'm from that group that thinks you should not interfere. If you touched them, the parents might abandon them. If I didn't do anything, the parents might abandon them anyway. I left. And Nature will know what to do.
Today they weren't there on the floor anymore. I want to believe that the parents have brought them back to the nest, but they may also have been the meal of the black-eyed cat that's always sneaking into my food scraps.

2016

This was the year that I tried to walk through Portugal looking for experience for the challenge that my land had for me.
There's always a learning process but in general I was a little disappointed with what I found. I hoped to learn from those authentic portuguese people from the interior but for those, the concept of volunteering is different. I met foreigners, hippies, unbalanced people and also megalomaniac ideas. Yet the detour I made to England was a little better, but the sustainability of the project rested on a rich some duke.
I met good people, especially in Andanças, where when I lost the car, it was confirmed that it wasn't yet time to settle down at Sabugal.
Still, some things went ahead. Some good, other not so much :)

E assim foi 2015 - And so it was 2015

That's how my projects were in 2015. With very little time spent at Casa Azul, the failure rate was hight.
It's normal for a city boy with ecological ideas and a passion for nature to stumble a lot. Even more when is someone who was used only to digital logics. The real world is very different and the ABC of the country isn't learned in 3 days. It takes many calluses, scratches, and time under rain to understand the functioning of this whole new physical world.
But I believe that the most important things are here: the pleasure and the will. And when you do, you learn fast.
