Projecto V: Plantação de Árvores - Tree Plantation

Um castanheiro, uma nogueira, um pinheiro manso e cedros. Todas as árvores foram compradas na feira do Sabugal à excepção do pinheiro. Obtive-o no caminho , mais ou menos na zona de Montargil. Parei o carro e olhei para ele. Não tinha mais de 80 cm. Mas desenterrá-lo é que foi "o elas". Acho que a porção de raízes que veio com ele não foi suficiente. Já me imaginava a comer das minhas castanhas, das minhas nozes e dos meus pinhões. A função dos cedros seria, junto à vedação, fazer uma barreira para o som da estrada, que fica aí a 50 metros e incomodava-me muito na altura.

Das cerca de 15 árvores que plantei, apenas a nogueira sobrevive e não cresceu grande coisa.

Construção

Para todas as árvores coloquei palha misturada com estrume de ovelhas no fundo da cova para servir de adubo e depois cobri com folhagem em volta do tronco para manter  a humidade por mais tempo. Os cedros foram colocados perto da vedação a norte, a nogueira (que precisa de mais água) numa zona mais húmida, o pinheiro na periferia do pinhal (de pinheiros bravos) e o castanheiro numa zona perto da casa onde imaginei a copa a dar uma agradável sombra. Com rede, apenas protegi o castanheiro e a nogueira. Junto do castanheiro também deixei um barril a perder gota a gota para que não lhe faltasse água nos primeiros tempos.

Sucedido

Os cedros secaram (os Verões são tórridos). O pinheiro foi atacado pelas ovelhas e acho que as raízes eram poucas. O castanheiro também secou. O barril perde gota a gota quando cheio. Chega a um ponto que já não tem pressão para perder gotas. O meu vizinho também se queixa que nunca conseguiu manter um vivo, por aqui. A nogueira sobrevive mas limpo-lhe as silvas em redor regularmente e parece precisar de algo mais para crescer.

Melhorias

Tudo o que não é natural aqui, requer cuidados (e extra nos primeiros anos). Ultimamente tenho optado por espécies mais resistentes e melhorado as condições do solo e hidrológicas. Também quando estiver por cá mais regularmente (o que penso fazer agora), posso pensar em ir tentando frutíferas.

A única árvore que resta - The only tree that's left

A chestnut tree, a walnut tree, a stone pine tree and cedars. All the trees were bought at the Sabugal  fair except the pine tree. I got it on the way, more or less in the Montargil area. I stopped the car and looked at it. It was not more than 80 cm. But to dig it up was really hard. I think the amount of roots that came with it wasn't enough. I imagined eating my chestnuts, my walnuts and my pine nuts. The purpose of the cedars would be, next to the fence, to make a sound barrier from the road, that is around 50 meters far and it bothered me much at the time.
Of the about 15 trees I planted, only the walnut tree survives and it didn't grew much.

Making
For all trees I put straw mixed with sheep manure in the bottom of the pit to serve as fertilizer and then covered with foliage around the trunk to keep the moisture for longer time. The cedars were placed near the northern fence, the walnut (which needs more water) in a wetter area, the pine on the outskirts of the pine forest (of maritime pines) and the chestnut in an area near the house where I imagined the canopy giving a nice shade. With net, I only protected the chestnut and walnut trees. Next to the chestnut tree, I also left a dripping barrel so that it didn't lack water in the early days.

Result
The cedars have dried up (summers are torrid). The pine was attacked by the sheep and I think the roots weren't enough. The chestnut tree also dried up. The barrel loses drop by drop when it's full. It reaches a point where it no longer has the pressure to lose drops. My neighbor also complains that he's never been able to keep one alive around here. The walnut tree survives but I clean it around regularly and seems to need something more to grow.

Improvements
Everything that is not natural here requires care (and extra in the early years). Lately I have opted for more resistant species and improved the soil and hydrological conditions. Also, when I'm here more often (which I think I'm going to do now), I can think of trying fruit trees.
