Projecto XIX: Recuperação de Banheira e Suporte - Bathtub Repair and Stand

A ideia inicial era um chuveiro. Estas coisas, não sendo de plástico, são caras e requerem fixação com cimento. Como não quero nada definitivo para já e os meus pais tinham guardado uma banheira velha a pensar num bebedouro para animais, zás! Continuo a achar uma banheira bem mais confortável para tomar banho que um chuveiro.

Construção

Andei a retirar ferrugem por baixo com uma rebarbadora, e por dentro, deixei actuar uma mistura de bicarbonato de sódio com vinagre. Equacionei muito a aplicação de um revestimento interior mas depois de muito ler, os malefícios da toxicidade destes produtos são demais. Prefiro uns pontinhos de ferrugem. Por baixo, pintei-a com um vermelho metalizado que o meu pai tinha lá para carros. Ficou com pinta de Ferrari. Gostava de adaptar uns pés mas iria danificar o fundo. Assim, fiz um suporte de madeira que me fez puxar pela cabeça e deu-me grande gozo. Comprei e apliquei um sifão e a este, liguei um tubo que sairia para fora da casa para escoar a água.

Utillização

Tudo bom. Tudo gostoso.Com cerca de 15 litros de água (5 dos quais a ferver) tomo banho como bem aprendi na Tailândia. Cerca de 40% para me molhar, 50% para me enxaguar e 10% para enxaguar a luva e passar a banheira por água. Vai-se optimizando a coisa reutilizando a água para lavar a cabeça e os braços. Inicialmente, quando ia às piscinas e tomava um duche a sério, sabia-me a tudo. Mas agora, no verão, é-me igual. É só mais um duche.

Melhorias

Água corrente: a canalização está feita, o sistema de aquecimento em progresso. Tratamento das águas cinzas: Apesar de não utilizar produtos com muitos químicos, umas plantas de folhas largas na zona de desaguamento, garantem uma melhor limpeza do solo.

Com tanto aviso do meu pai em relação ao espaço necessário para o sifão, o suporte ficou um pouco alto (até para mim!) Mas ele redimiu-se de pronto e com paletes fez um estrado para colocar debaixo do tapete ao lado da banheira.

The initial idea was a shower. But these things, whrn not being made out of plastic, are expensive and require cement fixation. Since I don't want anything definitive now, and my parents had kept an old bathtub thinking of animals to drink water, zás! I still find a bathtub much more comfortable to bathe than a shower.

Making
I started to remove the rust underneath with a grinder, and inside, I let a mixture of baking soda and vinegar for a while. I thought much about the application of an inner coating but after much reading, the harmful effects of the toxicity of these products are too much. I prefer a few rust spots. Underneath, I painted it with a metallic red paint that my father had there for cars. It looked like a Ferrari. I would like to adapt feet to it but it would damage the bottom. So I made a wooden stand that made me think hard and gave me great joy. I bought and applied a siphon and to this, I connected a pipe that would come out of the house to drain the water.

Use
Everything good , everything perfect.With about 15 liters of water (5 of which boiling) I bathe as I've learned in Thailand. About 40% to get wet, 50% to rinse and 10% to rinse the glove and the bathtub.I could optimized the process by reusing the water to wash the head and arms. Initially, when I went to the swimming pool and took a serious shower, it tasted like everything. But now, in the summer, I don't care. It's just another shower.

Improvements
Running water: the plumbing is done, the heating system in progress. Treatment of gray waters: Although I'm not using products with many chemicals, broad-leaved plants in the dewatering zone, ensure a better cleaning of the soil.
With so much notice from my father about the space required for the siphon, the support got a bit high (even for me!) But he redeemed himself at once and with a pallet he made a dais to put under the rug by the tub.

Projecto XVIII: Fogão Foguete - Rocket Stove

Desde o início que me recusei ao gás e as razões são várias: carregar bilhas de gás, custa; estar preso a outra conta mensal, não obrigado; e os impactos ambientais? donde vem o gás? o natural sei que vem da Rússia e a sua extracção ('Fracking') tem consequências muito graves. Investiguem.
Se a  ideia é ser auto-suficiente e há sempre lenha numa quinta, então o caminho seria por aqui. Inicialmente fazia uma fogueira mas posso-vos dizer que é uma grande ineficiência e um pesadelo.
Andei a pesquisar o que fazem os permacultores a este respeito e encontrei este engenho bem simples que pode ser feito com tubos metálicos, uma lata ou com tijolos. Eu optei pelos tijolos por apenas requerer montagem e parece-me mais bonito.

Construção

Comprei cerca de 30 tijolos refractários e com duas chapas fiz uma gaveta para as cinzas (um capricho meu) e o suporte da lenha, com vários furos. Faz-se um primeiro 'U' com tijolos, depois a chapa com os furos e outras duas camadas em 'U'. No primeiro 'U' coloquei a gaveta das cinzas e os dois acima são a entrada para a lenha. Depois, em quadrado, colocam-se mais 3 ou 4 camadas. Uma grelha por cima e está feito!
A beleza e eficiência desta coisa é que trabalha com galhos pequenos ou médios (que ardem mais depressa) e como o ar quente sobe, vai bem concentrado pela coluna acima obrigando o ar frio a entrar por onde se coloca a lenha. Este movimento de ar acelera a combustão fazendo-o soar como uma turbina (daí o nome).

Utilização

Nem tudo foram rosas. O suporte, a grelha e o tamanho da entrada de ar tiveram vários ajustes. O próprio manuseamento do fogo foi uma frustração inúmeras vezes, especialmente com o tempo húmido. Mas agora faço-o quase de olhos fechados, apenas pelo som. O fogo precisa de lenha como as plantas de águas. De menos ou demais mata-o.
Há um aspecto negativo com que aprendi a viver. Tudo o que vai ao lume fica negro e nem vale a pena lavar (não fazia mais nada). Tenho tachos para o lume outros só para os banhos-Maria. Chamo-lhe culinária suja mas tem-me alimentado.

Melhorias

Teria que ser o foguete a aquecer-me a água para o banho. 5 litros de água a ferver.
Dos muitos vídeos que vi, lá encontrei um que falava de uma saia que se coloca À volta do que está ao lume obrigando o calor a subir junto à panela em vez de dispersar. Sem saia, os 5l passados 40 minutos apenas ameaçavam ferver, com uma saia (uma panela velha e maior com um buraco no fundo onde as dobras deste encaixam a coluna do fogão) a água ferveu em 20 minutos! Era o primeiro sinal de entusiasmo de que as coisas iam correr bem. Outras melhorias: construir uma maior com duas colunas, fazer a entrada inclinada para não ter de ir empurrando os paus ou fazer um solar para poupar a combustão no verão.

From the beginning I refused gas and the reasons are several: carrying gas bottles, it's hard; be dependent on another monthly bill, no thank you; and environmental impacts? Where does the gas come from? the natural one I know it comes from Russia and its extraction ('Fracking') has very serious consequences. Check it.
If the idea is to be self-sufficient and there is always firewood in a farm, then it should be this way. Initially I was doing bonfires but I can tell you it's quite inefficient and a nightmare.
I have been researching what the permacultores do about this and I found this very simple device that can be made with metal tubes, a tin or with bricks. I opted for the bricks for just requiring assembly and it looks more beautiful to me.

Making
I bought about 30 refractory bricks and with two plates I made a drawer for the ashes (a caprice of mine) and the wood support with several holes. Make a first 'U' with bricks, then the plate with the holes and two other 'U' layers. In the first 'U' I put the drawer of the ashes and the two above are the entrance for the firewood. Then, in squared, put another 3 or 4 layers. A grill over and it's done!
The beauty and efficiency of this thing is that it works with small or medium branches (which burn more quickly) and as the warm air rises, it's well concentrated by the column way up, forcing the cold air to enter where the wood is placed. This air movement accelerates the combustion making it sound like a turbine (hence the name).

Use
Not all coming up roses. The drawer, grille and air intake size have had many adjustments. The very handling of the fire was a frustration numerous times, especially with the wet weather. But now I do it almost with my eyes closed, only by the sound. Fire needs firewood like plants need water. Less or too much kills it.
There is a negative aspect with which I learned to live. Everything that goes to the fire turns black and is not worth washing (I wouldn't do anything else). I have pots for fire and others just for water bath. I call it dirty cooking but it has fed me.

Improvements
It would have to be the rocket to heat the shower water. 5 liters of boiling water.
Of the many videos I've seen, there I found one that told of a skirt that is placed around of what is on the fire forcing the heat to rise next to the pan instead of dispersing. Without a skirt, after 40 minutes, it was only threatening to boil, with a skirt (an old, larger pot with a hole in the bottom where the folds fit in the chimney of the stove) the water boiled in 20 minutes! It was the first sign of enthusiasm that things were going to go well. Other improvements: build a larger one with two chimneys, make the entrance sloping so you don't have to push the sticks or make a solar to save combustion in the summer.

2018: O Ano do Compromisso - The Year of Commitment

Na convergência de permacultura na Tailândia - In Thailand's permaculture convergence

2017 não foi só o ano da aventura como professor na Tailândia mas também foi o crescente envolvimento com a permacultura. Não só nos projectos onde passei, como no jardim que tratei na escola mas especialmente com uns vídeos que a Teaw me passou em Chiang Mai do Geoff Lawton. Sempre franzi o nariz um pouco quando via a palavra permacultura associada a movimentos com grande carga espiritual. Apercebi-me depois que os grandes permacultores são bastante científicos, práticos e pragmáticos. Era a materialização do que sentia que era certo e que queria fazer. A única resposta para que a humanidade comece a viver em harmonia com o planeta.

Os vídeos, que não são mais que aulas de um curso de planeamento de permacultura, deram-me e ainda me estão a dar a orientação que precisava. Da hesitação entre as minhas ideias ecológicas e os saberes práticos locais, passei à confiança e positivismo deste conhecimento e a abordagem à minha terra nunca mais foi a mesma.

Já agora, quero desmistificar algo: Não existem terras más. Tudo depende da quantidade de matéria orgânica que se pode e deve aumentar, e sem ser necessário o transporte, se plantar-mos as espécies certas nos sítios certos.

Ainda na Tailândia, já com o foco no terreno e super inspirado pelos princípios, defini o que necessitava para ter o mínimo conforto para viver: eletricidade, internet, fogão e um banho no interior (pois viria em Janeiro). O plano para 2018 seria (e está a ser) passar mais tempo no Terreiro das Bruxas que no Montijo e tentar, dentro do possível, integrar-me nas comunidades e envolver-me nas associações locais.

Sinto agora que na Tailândia também tive outro tipo de aprendizagens importantes para o meu plano para 2018. Lidar melhor com a solidão e saber viver com condições mais simples.

Com quase quarenta anos, estava na altura de fazer árvores crescer para ter a esperança de as poder ver adultas.

O início do jardim - The garden's beginning

2017 was not only the year of the  adventure as a teacher in Thailand but it was also the growing involvement with permaculture. Not only in the projects I went through, but the garden I took care at school and especially with videos that Teaw gave me in Chiang Mai of Geoff Lawton's . I always frowned a little when I saw the word permaculture associated with movements with a great spiritual part. I realized then that the great permacultores are quite scientific, practical and pragmatic. It was the materialization of what I felt was right and what I wanted to do. The only answer so that humanity begins to live in harmony with the planet.

The videos, which are nothing but lessons from a permaculture design course, have given me, and still are, the guidance I needed. From the hesitation between my ecological ideas and local practical knowledge, I got the confidence and positivism of this knowledge and the approach to my land was never the same.

By the way, I want to demystify something: There are no bad soils. It all depends on the amount of organic matter that can and should be increased, and without transport, if we plant the right species in the right sites.

Still in Thailand, already focused on the land and super inspired by the principles, I defined what I needed to have the least comfort to live: electricity, internet, a stove and a bath indoors (because I would come in January). The plan for 2018 would be (and is being) to spend more time in Terreiro das Bruxas than in Montijo and try, as much as possible, to integrate with the communities and get involved in the local associations.

I now feel that in Thailand I also had another type of important learning for my plan for 2018. I deal better with loneliness and live with simpler conditions.

At the age of almost forty, it was time to grow trees and hope to be able to see them as adults.

Projecto XVII: Portão - The Gate

Este foi o único projecto realizado em 2017. Eu estava na Tailândia a assistir ao meu país a arder. Dois pequenos fogos passaram junto ao meu terreno (num dos quais com uma vítima - um senhor de idade avançada que deixou fugir do seu controlo uma queimada) motivando-me ainda mais a vir defender a minha terra.
Este projecto, de total autoria do meu pai, levanta um tema que desprezo e é motivado pela densidade populacional, que não se aplica aqui: a segurança. As armas de defesa nos Estados Unidos, os muros de Berlim, México, etc.., as vistorias apertadas nos aeroportos, os cadeados nas bicicletas no Montijo. Medo, medo e medo. Tantas acções de medo em vez de amor, liberdade e confiança. Mais uma boa razão para me afastar dos centros urbanos.

Construção

O meu pai fez um belo trabalho de serralharia mas ao instalar o portão teve dificuldades com as pedras no solo. A coisa não ficou alinhada como planeado e a calha central, onde as portas se unem, teve de ficar mais elevada que o esperado.

Utilização

Inicialmente, e com dificuldade, passava com o carro num dos lados da calha exigindo manobras extra. O processo de parar o carro, sair, abrir o portão, avançar com o carro, sair novamente, fechar o portão e seguir, era chato e não fazia sentido quando o terreno é apenas vedado num dos lados com uma vedação intransponível apenas para pessoas com mobilidade reduzida. Acabei por retirar a calha e o alicerce de cimento. Um pontapé em duas coisas a que me oponho.

Melhorias

Telecomando, câmeras de vigilância... tou a brincar.
Este projecto não me preocupa minimamente.

Custo

Ele ainda gastou uma pipa de massa mas há outras coisas que falam mais alto.

This was the single project occured in 2017. I was in Thailand watching my country burn. Two small fires passed by my land (one of which had a victim - an old man who let a burnt out of his control) motivating me even more to come and defend my land.
This project, entirely done by my father, raises a theme that I despise and is motivated by population density, which doesn't apply here: security. The defense weapons in the United States, the walls of Berlin, Mexico, etc., the tight inspections at the airports, the bicycle locks at Montijo. Fear, fear and fear. So many actions of fear instead of love, freedom and trust. One more good reason to move away from the urban centers.

Making
My father did a beautiful job of metalworks but when he installed the gate he had problems with the stones in the ground. The thing was not aligned as planned and the gate stop where the doors come together had to be higher than expected.

Use
Initially, and with difficulty, I passed with the car on one side of the gate stop requiring extra maneuvers. The process of stopping the car, getting out, opening the gate, moving in with the car, getting out again, closing the gate and leaving, was annoying and didn't make sense when the land is only fenced on one side with an insurmountable fence only for people with reduced mobility. I finally removed the stop with the cement foundation. A kick in two things that I oppose.

Improvements
Remote control, surveillance cameras... I'm kidding.
This project doesn't concern me at all.

Cost
He spent a quite a lot with this but there are other things that speak louder.

Projecto XVI: Janelas - Windows

Com o telhado feito, falta apenas fazer umas janelas para que o interior fique protegido de chuva, sol, animais e correntes de ar. Duas no casebre e uma na cozinha. Decidi, por agora, colocar uma rede fina fixa que impede a entrada de insectos mas também o nosso acesso ao exterior, e uma portada interior de madeira.

Construção

Este projecto ficou a cargo do meu pai. Voltou a utilizar a madeira de encaixe que foi aplicada no duche para a portada, e outra mais tosca para a moldura e fixação da rede. Duas dobradiças e um trinco simples. Estou-lhe bastante agradecido, não só pelas janelas mas por me mostrar que estes trabalhos são relativamente fáceis.

Utilização

Apesar da madeira colocada na diagonal para travamento, na altura de abrir ou fechar a portada, é sempre necessário um ajuste com a outra mão. Na da cozinha, com tábuas mais brutas, nem com ajuste é possível fechar. Uso agora uma rolha para a manter fechada.

Quanto à rede, não tenho tido necessidade de aceder ao exterior mas apercebi-me que , infelizmente, é uma armadilha para moscas, abelhas, vespas e outros bichos que entram doutra forma e depois ficam ali a tentar sair.

Estas janelas são artesanais e considero-as muito bonitas. Sempre sonhei em ter janelas de madeira.

Melhorias

Neste inverno uma melhoria foi automaticamente desejada: calafetagem. Também já tive que substituir uma madeira onde assentava uma das dobradiças. Fora isso, só num futuro longícuo, substituí-las por janelas de madeira com vidro duplo. Quando houver dinheiro.

Muito baixo. Acho que ficou por conta do meu pai.

Making
This project was taken care of by my father. He returned to using the wood of which was applied in the shower for the cover, and another more rough for the frame and fixation of the net. Two hinges and a simple latch. I am very grateful to you, not only for the windows but for showing me that these works are relatively easy.

Use
Although the wood is placed diagonally for locking, when opening or closing the cover, an adjustment with the other hand is always necessary. In the kitchen, with more raw boards, not even with adjustment, it is possible to close. I now use a cork stopper to keep it closed.
As for the net, I haven't missed to access outside but I realized that, unfortunately, it's a trap for flies, bees, wasps and other animals that enter in another way and then they stay there trying to get out.
These windows are handcrafted and I find them very beautiful. I always dreamed of having wooden windows.

Improvements
This winter an improvement was automatically desired: caulking. I also had to replace a wood where one of the hinges would sit. Other than that, only in a long-term future, replace them with double glazed wooden windows. When there is money.

Very cheap. I think my father took care of it.

Projecto XV: Telhado - Roof

Apenas com uma tenda pequena e uma cozinha de 10m2 de área coberta, estava a ser muito desconfortável viver aqui. Necessitava de algo mais e também inspirado pela Casa dos Amigos, no alentejo, comecei a pensar numa caravana. Em sites de classificados só encontrei uma barata que precisava de remodelaçao e como não tinha documentos, também precisaria de transporte. Um balúrdio. Com esse dinheiro ou menos colocaria um telhado no casebre e teria menos trabalho.

Procurei soluções ecológicas como um telhado verde (com plantinhas) que requer inúmeras camadas e é caro. As paredes também não poderiam suportar algo muito pesado. Também pensei num telhado com giestas mas tem de ser renovado todos os 3 anos e quem sabe fazer isso por aqui? Giestas até não me faltam. Lá me rendi à placa sanduíche que toda a gente sugeria. Para quem não sabe, o pão é chapa cor de telha e o conduto ´uma camada de esponja que isola termicamente e torna o telhado bem leve.

Construção

Falei com o Joaquim 'Mandongo', aqui de Santo Estevão, que já cá tinha vindo para dar um orçamento à minha ideia inicial de remodelação geral, de que desisti após saber o valor desse mesmo orçamento. Este só cá poderia vir aos sábados, acompanhado de um ajudante. No penúltimo sábado, que era o meu último aqui, antes de ir para a Tailândia, paguei-lhe o serviço, apesar de senhoras próximas, não concordarem com pagamentos antecipados. A minha fé continua a ser: se não acreditarmos em pessoas boas, elas desaparecem (como os animais em extinção).

Cerca de meio ano depois, os meus pais vieram até aqui e aperceberam-se que o último sábado não tinha chegado a acontecer. De pronto, a minha mãe arranjou o seu número e ligou-lhe. deve ter vindo com o rabo entre as pernas colocar as últimas placas (de uma área total de 21 m2).

Utilização

Apesar do 'Mandongo' dar juz ao seu nome, o telhado é o projecto com maior impacto (também o mais caro). Agora os verões são mais confortáveis e os invernos possíveis. De ruínas passou a casebre e abrir uma porta enorme a novos projectos e comodidades.

Melhorias

Ainda existem fendas que têm tornado o meu contacto com osgas mais íntimo e faltam umas chapinhas para tapar alguma esponja que ficou à vista. Ele virá cá em breve para esses acabamentos.

Sendo chapa, a chuva e vento são bem audíveis que espero melhorar com um tecto falso.

Only with a small tent and a 10m2 kitchen of covered area, it was being very uncomfortable to live here. I needed something more and also inspired by the House of Friends in Alentejo, I began to think of a caravan. In classified websites I only found one cheap that needed restoration and since it had no documents, I would also need transportation. Too much. With that money or less I would put a roof in the hovel and would have less work.
I looked for green solutions like a green roof (with little plants) that requires numerous layers and is expensive. The walls can't stand anything too heavy, either. Also I thought of a roof with genistas but it has to be renewed every 3 years and who knows how to do it here? But I have plenty of it. There I surrendered to the sandwich plate that everyone suggested. For those who don't know, the bread is tile-colored sheet and inside is a layer of sponge that works as a thermic insolation and makes the roof very light.

Making
I spoke with Joaquim 'Mandongo'(dirty) , here from Santo Estevão, who had already come here to give a budget to my initial idea of general remodeling, which I gave up after knowing the value of this same budget. He could only come here on Saturdays, accompanied by an assistant. On the penultimate Saturday, which was my last one here, before I went to Thailand, I paid him for the service, although close ladies didn't agree with advance payments. My faith continues to be: if we don't believe in good people, they disappear (like endangered species).
About half a year later, my parents came here and realized that the last Saturday hadn't happened. Right away, my mother got his number and called him. He should have come with the tail between the legs to put the last plates (of a total area of 21 m2).

Use
Although 'Mandongo' does justice to its name, the roof is the project with the greatest impact (also the most expensive). Now summers are more comfortable and winters are possible. From ruins it went to hut and open a huge door to new projects and amenities.

Improvements
There are still crevices that have made my contact with geckos more intimate and some little plaques to cover some sponge are missing. He'll be here soon for these finishes.
Being metal sheets, the rain and wind are well audible that I hope to improve with a false ceiling.
