No ano seguinte pouco consegui fazer enquanto mantinha o meu emprego.
Obrigado!
The Blue House (which isn't blue yet) is located in Terreiro das Bruxas (Witchs' Yard) in the county of Sabugal .. in Guarda.
By the end of 2014 I had visited a lot of pieces of land and I even made a software that would alert me when a land with certain requirements appeared. The routine of the office was smothering me and the search for a piece of land was like searching for air to breathe. The application there highlighted a place that made me very curious. To this one, I added two more in the area so that the long trip would be more productive. I remember that the first lot I saw was ok with a wooden house on a hillside in need of deep repairs and a somewhat strange disposition. The second was the one of Terreiro. The arrival was made through a small pinewood and at it's end, a view to a valley with the beauty of the granites and the oaks. The click was clear. It seemed to be the arrival at the Enchanted Valley. It didn't have the boring rectangular and flat shape but a triangular one with terraces of reasonable sizes, slopes of varying gradients, several sources of water, trees for wood, olives and some fruits, an adjacent brook and ruins right in the center. Father's farming stories of whom sold me the land, and a neighbor who watches over it in my absence. I went to see the third place already sure of which one to choose..
20000 euros for 3 hectares. Cheaper than in Thailand. The price to pay for the 300km distance from my homeland. The proof of this is that in these three years I was only visited by 4 family members and a friend who has family here in the county. But I also see advantages in the distance: peace, less pollution, more virgin land and greater diversity of flora and fauna, a little more friendly people and nicer cost of living. The more continental climate is also another difficulty that has challenged me with colder winters and warmer summers. But like any challenge, the resulting learning is priceless.
The next year I couldn't do enough while I kept my job. In 2016, after experiences as a volunteer on similar projects I tried to establish here but limited conditions and certain emotional distractions led me to postpone the project.
After a year in Thailand (https://back2thai.blogspot.pt/), the taste for permaculture never went down, got stronger and gave me the confidence I hope to be enough to take this project ahead.
If the world is on the way to collapse? Yes, no doubt but I can't think of anything else than to do something about it. But there is only one way to do it: being optimistic. And I thank this teaching to Geoff Lawton. For example, of the trees I have planted here, only a walnut tree remains alive. A lemon tree that I had for a few years ago died last summer. This event, some time ago, would bring me down but now it's just a mistake that gave me some learning. There is a lot of negativism, especially in Portugal. But what's the use of it?
Quotes from People that inspired me:
Cousin Ricardo - "If you really want to do this, you'll also do it by yourself."
Taew (Punsaeng House) - "Youtube helps me a lot to deal with the misunderstanding around me."
Xesc - "Don't think too much and do your thing."
Alright! I hope this blog serves, like the others, to keep me close to the ones I care and share thoughts and projects. May it be a source of learning, inspiration, confidence and willingness to visit me :)
A special final word to my parents who have been oldster with an endless generosity and support. Thank you!
