Projecto XVI: Janelas - Windows

Com o telhado feito, falta apenas fazer umas janelas para que o interior fique protegido de chuva, sol, animais e correntes de ar. Duas no casebre e uma na cozinha. Decidi, por agora, colocar uma rede fina fixa que impede a entrada de insectos mas também o nosso acesso ao exterior, e uma portada interior de madeira.

Construção

Este projecto ficou a cargo do meu pai. Voltou a utilizar a madeira de encaixe que foi aplicada no duche para a portada, e outra mais tosca para a moldura e fixação da rede. Duas dobradiças e um trinco simples. Estou-lhe bastante agradecido, não só pelas janelas mas por me mostrar que estes trabalhos são relativamente fáceis.

Utilização

Apesar da madeira colocada na diagonal para travamento, na altura de abrir ou fechar a portada, é sempre necessário um ajuste com a outra mão. Na da cozinha, com tábuas mais brutas, nem com ajuste é possível fechar. Uso agora uma rolha para a manter fechada.

Quanto à rede, não tenho tido necessidade de aceder ao exterior mas apercebi-me que , infelizmente, é uma armadilha para moscas, abelhas, vespas e outros bichos que entram doutra forma e depois ficam ali a tentar sair.

Estas janelas são artesanais e considero-as muito bonitas. Sempre sonhei em ter janelas de madeira.

Melhorias

Neste inverno uma melhoria foi automaticamente desejada: calafetagem. Também já tive que substituir uma madeira onde assentava uma das dobradiças. Fora isso, só num futuro longícuo, substituí-las por janelas de madeira com vidro duplo. Quando houver dinheiro.

With the roof made, it's only necessary to make a few windows so that the interior is protected from rain, sun, animals and drafts. Two in the hut and one in the kitchen. Making
This project was taken care of by my father. He returned to using the wood of which was applied in the shower for the cover, and another more rough for the frame and fixation of the net. Two hinges and a simple latch. I am very grateful to you, not only for the windows but for showing me that these works are relatively easy.

Use
Although the wood is placed diagonally for locking, when opening or closing the cover, an adjustment with the other hand is always necessary. In the kitchen, with more raw boards, not even with adjustment, it is possible to close. I now use a cork stopper to keep it closed.
As for the net, I haven't missed to access outside but I realized that, unfortunately, it's a trap for flies, bees, wasps and other animals that enter in another way and then they stay there trying to get out.
These windows are handcrafted and I find them very beautiful. I always dreamed of having wooden windows.

Improvements
This winter an improvement was automatically desired: caulking. I also had to replace a wood where one of the hinges would sit. Other than that, only in a long-term future, replace them with double glazed wooden windows. When there is money.

Projecto XV: Telhado - Roof

Apenas com uma tenda pequena e uma cozinha de 10m2 de área coberta, estava a ser muito desconfortável viver aqui. Necessitava de algo mais e também inspirado pela Casa dos Amigos, no alentejo, comecei a pensar numa caravana. Em sites de classificados só encontrei uma barata que precisava de remodelaçao e como não tinha documentos, também precisaria de transporte. Um balúrdio. Com esse dinheiro ou menos colocaria um telhado no casebre e teria menos trabalho.

Procurei soluções ecológicas como um telhado verde (com plantinhas) que requer inúmeras camadas e é caro. As paredes também não poderiam suportar algo muito pesado. Também pensei num telhado com giestas mas tem de ser renovado todos os 3 anos e quem sabe fazer isso por aqui? Giestas até não me faltam. Lá me rendi à placa sanduíche que toda a gente sugeria. Para quem não sabe, o pão é chapa cor de telha e o conduto ´uma camada de esponja que isola termicamente e torna o telhado bem leve.

Construção

Falei com o Joaquim 'Mandongo', aqui de Santo Estevão, que já cá tinha vindo para dar um orçamento à minha ideia inicial de remodelação geral, de que desisti após saber o valor desse mesmo orçamento. Este só cá poderia vir aos sábados, acompanhado de um ajudante. No penúltimo sábado, que era o meu último aqui, antes de ir para a Tailândia, paguei-lhe o serviço, apesar de senhoras próximas, não concordarem com pagamentos antecipados. A minha fé continua a ser: se não acreditarmos em pessoas boas, elas desaparecem (como os animais em extinção).

Cerca de meio ano depois, os meus pais vieram até aqui e aperceberam-se que o último sábado não tinha chegado a acontecer. De pronto, a minha mãe arranjou o seu número e ligou-lhe. deve ter vindo com o rabo entre as pernas colocar as últimas placas (de uma área total de 21 m2).

Utilização

Apesar do 'Mandongo' dar juz ao seu nome, o telhado é o projecto com maior impacto (também o mais caro). Agora os verões são mais confortáveis e os invernos possíveis. De ruínas passou a casebre e abrir uma porta enorme a novos projectos e comodidades.

Melhorias

Ainda existem fendas que têm tornado o meu contacto com osgas mais íntimo e faltam umas chapinhas para tapar alguma esponja que ficou à vista. Ele virá cá em breve para esses acabamentos.

Sendo chapa, a chuva e vento são bem audíveis que espero melhorar com um tecto falso.

Only with a small tent and a 10m2 kitchen of covered area, it was being very uncomfortable to live here. I needed something more and also inspired by the House of Friends in Alentejo, I began to think of a caravan. In classified websites I only found one cheap that needed restoration and since it had no documents, I would also need transportation. Too much. With that money or less I would put a roof in the hovel and would have less work.
I looked for green solutions like a green roof (with little plants) that requires numerous layers and is expensive. The walls can't stand anything too heavy, either. Also I thought of a roof with genistas but it has to be renewed every 3 years and who knows how to do it here? But I have plenty of it. There I surrendered to the sandwich plate that everyone suggested. For those who don't know, the bread is tile-colored sheet and inside is a layer of sponge that works as a thermic insolation and makes the roof very light.

Making
I spoke with Joaquim 'Mandongo'(dirty) , here from Santo Estevão, who had already come here to give a budget to my initial idea of general remodeling, which I gave up after knowing the value of this same budget. He could only come here on Saturdays, accompanied by an assistant. On the penultimate Saturday, which was my last one here, before I went to Thailand, I paid him for the service, although close ladies didn't agree with advance payments. My faith continues to be: if we don't believe in good people, they disappear (like endangered species).
About half a year later, my parents came here and realized that the last Saturday hadn't happened. Right away, my mother got his number and called him. He should have come with the tail between the legs to put the last plates (of a total area of 21 m2).

Use
Although 'Mandongo' does justice to its name, the roof is the project with the greatest impact (also the most expensive). Now summers are more comfortable and winters are possible. From ruins it went to hut and open a huge door to new projects and amenities.

Improvements
There are still crevices that have made my contact with geckos more intimate and some little plaques to cover some sponge are missing. He'll be here soon for these finishes.
Being metal sheets, the rain and wind are well audible that I hope to improve with a false ceiling.

Projecto XIV: Caminho - Road

Por esta altura as coisas não me corriam bem. Eram demasiados indícios a dizerem-me que ainda não era o momento para me estabelecer no Terreiro das Bruxas. Já com esse sentimento assente, aceitei abrir os cordões à bolsa para melhorar as condições gerais do terreno para que um dia mais tarde regressasse.

O caminho antigo só era possível para um todo o terreno e o antigo dono já me tinha sugerido um caminho novo. O esforço do transporte daquela distância não era agradável e o meu pai também insistia nessa melhoria.

Construção

O meu vizinho sugeriu-me um tal Zé Carlos. Um artista das máquinas de trabalhos terrestres. Custou-me ver uma área com giestas adultas e alguns carvalhos pequenos a serem varridos. Mas tenho de pensar que é por uma causa maior. Algo que também me custou foi ver o senhor a mandar constantemente as beatas para o chão. Aquele sentimento de encher por dentro só descansou quando lhe ofereci um recipiente pedindo-lhe que lá as colocasse.

Resultado

O caminho ficou feito com uma vala ao lado que não ficou a cem por cento por causa de uma rocha. Limpou-me algumas silvas e por sua vontade tinha limpo mais. Descobriu uma pequena nascente e com um brilho nos olhos perguntou-me se podia fazer um mini-lago. Um bónus agradável. Depois de lhe pagar convidou-me para ir beber umas cervejas à associação. Tudo normal. 

Melhorias

Com o que sei hoje de permacultura talvez não tivesse feito o caminho direito. Deveria ter plantado árvores nas bermas, apesar de não saber quando regressaria. Mas sem dúvida que não há comparação no conforto do transporte do carro-casebre e vice-versa.

Things weren't going well for me at this point. There was too much evidence to tell me that it wasn't yet time to settle down in Terreiro das Bruxas. Already with this feeling of acceptance, I agreed to open my wallet to improve the general conditions of the land so that one day later I could return.
The old road was only possible for an off-road and the former owner had already suggested a new way. The effort of transportation from that distance wasn't pleasant, and my father also insisted on this improvement.

Making
My neighbor suggested me some Zé Carlos. An artist of earth works machines. It was hard to see an area with adult genisteaes and a few small oaks to be swept away. But I have to think it's for a greater cause. Something that was also hard was to see him constantly throwing the cigarette butts to the ground. That feeling of filling inside only rested when I offered him a container asking him to put them there.

Result
The path was made with a ditch beside it that isn't one hundred percent because of a rock. He cleared some brambles and by his will he had cleaned more. He spotted a small spring and with a twinkle in his eyes he asked me if he could make a mini-pond. A nice bonus. After paying him, he invited me to have a few beers. Everything normal.

Improvements
With what I know about permaculture nowdays I wouldn't have made the road straight. I should have planted trees on the sides, though I didn't know when I would come back. But surely there isn't comparison in the comfort of car-haul transport and vice versa.

Projecto XIII: Cama com Feijões - Bed with Beans

Estava na hora de cultivar um vegetal. A escolha pelo feijão não estava apenas influenciada pela época mas por ser uma espécie melhoradora da terra e de cultivo razoavelmente fácil. Ainda me lembro bem de germinar feijão num frasco com algodão quando era miúdo.

Construção

A escolha do sítio tinha de reunir três condições: local abrigado do vento e dos animais (que minimizasse a vedação a ser feita), com boa exposição solar e naturalmente com alguma humidade na terra para me permitir ausências por poucos dias. O sítio mais óbvio com estas condições é uma pequena clareira abaixo da mina onde a água que verte desta infiltra-se no solo. Sítio com hortelã-pimenta espontânea.
Aparetemente só existem dois caminhos estreitos para lá chegar, e nestes, bloqueei a passagem com galhos e silvas que já tinham sido cortadas antes.
À terra, respeitando o princípio da permacultura que não se deve interferir com o solo, apenas arranquei a erva e delineei as camas com madeiras velhas que estavam na cave. As sementes, um mix que tinha vindo a coleccionar.

Resultado
Passados uns dias, depois de uma das minha ausências, foi com felicidade que encontrei parte dos feijoeiros bem verdinhos a erguerem-se por entre as ervas secas que cobriam a terra. Passada nova ausência, foi com desilusão que assisti aos destroços da passagem das ovelhas que arranjaram forma de entrar na zona vedada. Talvez, simplesmente saltando de um socalco que me parecia alto demais para tal.
A minha próxima ausência coincidiria com o fogo no Andanças e perda do carro que alongaria o período de forma aos feijoeiros não terem qualquer chance.

Melhorias
Manter as ovelhas em espaço limitado (como estão presentemente). E estar por perto. Acompanhar.

A clareira - The glade

It was time to grow a vegetable. The beans choice wasn't only influenced by the season but for being a soil improver and a reasonably easy cultivation. I still remember germinating beans in a bottle with cotton as a kid.

Making
The choice of the spot had to meet three conditions: sheltered from wind and animals (to minimize the fence to be made), with good sun exposure and naturally with some moisture in the soil to allow my absences for a few days. The most obvious site with these conditions is a small glade below the tank where the water leaking from it infiltrates into the soil. Site with spontaneous peppermint.
There are only two narrow paths to get there, and in these, I blocked the passage with branches and brambles that had already been cut before.
To the soil, and respecting the principle of permaculture that we should not interfere with the soil, I just ripped the grass and delineated the beds with old wood boards that were in the basement. The seeds, a mix I had been collecting.

Result
A few days later, after one of my absences, it was happily that I found some of the baby green bean plants rising among the mulch that covered the land. After a new absence, it was with disillusionment that I witnessed the wreckage of the passage of the sheep that found a way to enter in the fenced area. Maybe, just jumping off a terrace that seemed too tall for me.
My next absence would coincide with the fire in Andanças and loss of the car, that would extend the period so that the beans didn't have any chance.

Improvements
Keep the sheep in a limited space (as they are presently). And to be around. Present.

Persistência - Persistence

Muitos devem estar a pensar: que louco é este que apenas está a descrever falhanços? Os projectos dele correm quase todos mal. Assim, nem ensina nada a ninguém.

Já tinha dito antes que cada falhanço é uma aprendizagem. Acho que muita gente diz que "é com os erros que se aprende" mas pouca gente acredita mesmo nisso ou não está para se sujeitar a falhanços.

Ao ver os meus progressos actuais, é com um sorriso que descrevo os projectos antigos. Sem eles continuaria no mesmo patamar de inexperiência. O que não significa que não continue a realizar projectos de uma estrela :)

A lição que quero mesmo passar é que quando se gosta de algo, a persistência leva-nos a algum lado.

Many must be thinking: what crazy guy is this that is only describing failures? Almost all of his projects go wrong. This way, he doesn't even teach anything.

I've said before that every failure is a lesson. I think that a lot of people say that "it's with mistakes that we learn" but just a few people really believe it or don't want to be bothered with failures.

Seeing my current progress, I describe the old projects with a smile. Without them, I would remain at the same level of inexperience. Which doesn't mean that I don't keep creating one star projects :)

The lesson I really want to pass is that when you like something, persistence takes you somewhere.

Projecto XII: Colmeia com o meu amigo Hélio - Beehive with my friend Hélio

Infelizmente o mel é um produto facilmente adulterado para maiores lucros mas felizmente basta apenas atrair abelhas para que o façam por nós. E para mim, é um substituto saudável do açúcar e tem inúmeras aplicações.
Um dos poucos meus amigos que não tem medo do mato, o Hélio, é de famílias mais rurais. Veio até aqui passar uns dias acompanhado com a mulher e o filho. Ele já cria abelhas há vários anos e estava com vontade de tentar criar um modelo de colmeia mais prático e económico de fazer: a top bar.
O mel não é uma planta mas este projecto é como estar a semear mel.

Construção

Fomos até uma serração e o Hélio fez valer os seus dotes de negociador para trazermos umas tábuas por meia bagatela. Fizemos um bom trabalho de equipa onde eu serrava e ele pregava (ou vice-versa). A coisa ficou meio tosca mas confiámos que funcionasse. As ripas onde as abelhas constroem os favos levam um rasgo onde é colocado cera de abelhas derretida. E o interior é barrado com mel e uma aromática, a alfazema no nosso caso. O Hélio escolheu um sítio que lhe pareceu abrigado e com muita alfazema em redor. Ainda acabei o telhado sozinho usando um contraplacado flexível que tinha aí e caricas para ajudarem a fixar os pregos.

Resultado

O vento ou as ovelhas insistiram em derrubar a colmeia. Os pés, fracos, também não ajudavam. O que conseguimos atrair foi uma ou outra vespa que fazem ninhos solitários.

Melhorias

Os buracos, tanto no telhado como na caixa aparentavam ser o desconforto suficiente para que as abelhas não vissem a colmeia como um sítio apetecível a habitar. O Hélio aconselhou-me a tapar os buracos com barro. Assim o fiz, coloquei uma cobertura de plástico no telhado, para garantir que não chovesse no interior e coloquei uns pés mais resistentes. Já nesta primavera, na altura da reprodução das abelhas assim ficou mais duas semanas no mesmo local. Nada! Descobri uma colmeia tradicional noutra zona do meu terreno, supostamente de um primo do meu vizinho, e habitada! O sítio parecia convidativo e não tive meias medidas. Coloquei a minha, novamente barrada com mel e alfazema, ao lado da outra. Umas semanas e nada :( Que desespero. Será do plástico, de tanto remendo? Talvez o design não esteja bem. Já considero comprar ou fazer uma caixa tradicional.

Unfortunately honey is a product easily adulterated for greater profits but fortunately all it takes is just to attract bees to do it for us. And for me, it's the healthy substitute for sugar and it has lots of applications.
One of the few friends of mine who isn't afraid of Nature, Helio, is from a more rural families. He came here for a few days with his wife and son. He has been raising bees for several years and was eager to try to create a more practical and economical hive model: the top bar.
Honey is not a plant but this project is like being sowing honey.

Making
We went to a sawmill and Helio made use of his negotiating skills to bring some boards for little money. We did a good teamwork where I sawed and he nailed (or vice versa). It was kind of rugged, but we hoped it worked. The slats where bees build honeycombs take a rip where beeswax is melted. And the interior is barred with honey and an aromatic, lavender in our case. Hélio chose a place that seemed to him sheltered and with a lot of lavender around. I still finished the roof alone using a flexible plywood that was there and bottle caps to help fix the nails.

Result
The wind or the sheep insisted on knocking down the hive. The legs, weak, didn't help either. What we managed to attract was one or another wasp that makes solitary nests.

Improvements
 The roof's and the box's holes appeared to be discomfort enough for the bees not see the hive as a desirable place to dwell. Helio advised me to cover the holes with mud. So I did, I put a plastic cover on the roof, to make sure it didn't rain inside and put some sturdier legs. Already this spring, at the bees' reproduction time there it stayed like this two more weeks in the same place. Nothing! I discovered a traditional beehive in another area of my land, supposedly from my neighbor's cousin, and inhabited! The place looked inviting and I didn't have any compunction. I placed mine, again barred with honey and lavender, next to the other. A few weeks and nothing :( What a despair. Is it the plastic, or so much mend? Maybe the design isn't well. I already consider to buy or make a traditional box.

Projecto XI: Plantio de um Limoeiro e de uma Cerejeira - Planting of a Lemon and a Cherry Trees

Será escusado falar da importância dos limões. Já não me lembro bem quando adquiri o limoeiro mas estava a viver na minha casa no Montijo. Num vaso bem grande, ali estava na varanda. Quando aluguei a casa passou (continuando no vaso) a estar plantado na oficina do meu pai. A melhor altura dele onde chegou a dar um ou dois limões. Depois passou para a casa do meu irmão. A cerejeira, oferecida pelos meus tios do Livramaento, entusiasmados pelas minhas ambições agrícolas (que são na verdade muito descontraídas), era mais alta que eu e trouxe-me dificuldades para a carregar no carro.
Estava na altura de lhes dar um sítio definitivo onde pudessem florescer livremente.

Construção

Em ambos os casos pedi conselhos ao Sr. Joaquim, o meu vizinho quase sócio. A geada trama o limoeiro. Esta não é zona de citrinos Os que se vêem, normalmente estão em cantos encostados às casas e alguns até debaixo de alpendres.. Mesmo os do Sr. Joaquim, com todos os seus anos experienciados aqui, não passam de pequenas árvores da minha altura. Então ele indicou um canto virado para sul, onde um lado é a parede de um socalco e o outro uma das ruínas. Assim o fiz. Quanto à cerejeira também me indicou uma zona onde já lá se tinham dado cerejeiras grandes e ainda se conseguem ver os vestígios. Zona algo longe da casa já do outro lado do seu terreno onde tenho um pequeno poço. Assim o fiz também.

Sucedido

O limoeiro durou quase dois anos não resistindo à grande seca do ano passado. A cerejeira penso nem ter durado tanto. Não colhi qualquer fruto de ambas as árvores.

Melhorias

Novamente a minha ausência explica o insucesso. No caso do limoeiro pensei que se aguentasse pois sobreviveu à minha intermitência em 2016. A cerejeira depressa secou (desculpem tios). As cerejeiras mortas naquela zona não eram um bom presságio. Árvores que requerem mais atenção não podem ser plantadas longe, pelo menos enquanto o ecossistema estiver tão pobre.

Descansem em paz - Rest in peace

No need to tell about the importance of lemons. I can't remember when I got the lemon tree but I was living in my house in Montijo. In a large vase, ther he was on the porch. When I rented the house he went (still in the pot) to be planted in my father's garage. The best time of it where it gave one or two lemons. Then he went to my brother's house. The cherry tree, offered by my uncle and aunt from Livramaento, excited by my agricultural ambitions (which are actually very relaxed), was taller than me and made it hard to fit in the car.
It was time to give them a definite place where they could flourish freely.

Making

In both cases I asked for advice from Mr. Joaquim, my near-neighbor. Frost harms the lemon tree. This is not a zone of citrus trees. Those I see around here are usually in corners of houses and some even under porches. Even those of Mr. Joaquim, with all his years of experience here, are only small trees of my height. Then he pointed to a south-facing corner, where one side is the wall of a terrace and the other one of the ruins. So I did. As for the cherry tree, he also indicated an area where large cherry trees had already flourish and the traces can still be seen. Area a bit far from the house already behind Mr. Joaquim's land where I have a small well. So did I.

Result
The lemon tree lasted for almost two years not being able to withstand the great drought of last year. The cherry tree didn't last that much. I didn't harvest any fruit from both trees.

Improvements
Again my absence explains the failure. In the case of the lemon tree, I thought it could hold on since
it survived my intermittency in 2016. The cherry tree soon dried up (sorry uncle and aunt). The dead cherry trees in that area weren't a good omen. Trees that require more attention can not be planted far, at least as long as the ecosystem is so poor.
